SINA.com Global # 1 Chinese Destination Site
launches custom built site for Hong Kong
Hong Kong Internet Users Now a Member of Global SINA.com Network
Hong Kong 20/7/99 SINA.com, the leading Internet destination site for Chinese communities world-wide, today launched the newest member of its global network in Hong Kong. According to the China Internet Network Information Centre (CNNIC), an official body providing internet statistics, auditing and other related research in China, SINA.com's Beijing site recorded an average daily page view of 2.82m for mid June. SINA.com recently announced that this number had increased to 3.4m in mid July and the sites attract 6m page views per day worldwide. Together with the recent results of a survey conducted by www.consult.com , these figures indicate that SINA.com is the top and most popular website in China.
SINA.com serves more Chinese language Internet users than any other site world wide and will provide Hong Kong residents with the most complete array of in-language information services available. With sites in China, the United States and Taiwan, SINA.com serves around one million registered users and generates more than 180 million page views per month. The Hong Kong launch completes SINA.com's coverage of Greater China.
"People in different countries or regions of the world have individual preferences, so Internet destination sites cannot take a 'one size fits all' approach," said Laurie Kan, General Manager, SINA.com Hong Kong. "We have achieved our position as the number one Internet destination site for Chinese communities world-wide by delivering a comprehensive set of information services that is global in scope, yet customised for local audiences, whether they be in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Greater China or North America. It is very exciting for us to have Hong Kong join the SINA.com network and gain a local gateway to the world's largest online Chinese community."
Kan is a new member of what is largely regarded as a SINA "dream team" from the world-wide Chinese technology community, all sharing the common interest of creating the best Chinese language online society. The creation of SINA.com is the result of the merger of Sinanet.com and Stone Rich Sight Information Technology Company (SRS) in December 1998, the two largest Internet destinations that had previously served a Chinese-language cyber audience. SRS is the creator of the internationally renowned Rich Win software, the world's most popular Chinese software. This union has created a tremendous professional talent pool and a significant competitive edge in providing in-language content without the requirement of a Chinese language operating system.
In addition to Kan, the former CEO of PointCast Asia, Managing Director of Microsoft Hong Kong and CEO of Timeless Software, SINA.com's management team includes:
Jim Sha, CEO: Sha was Senior Vice President and General Manager for Netscape's commerce solutions and has served as CEO of Actra Business Systems, a joint venture between Netscape and GE Information Services Daniel Chiang, Chairman: Chiang was named one of "Asia's Internet Moguls" by Inter@ctive Week Magazine and was President of TrendMicro Zhidong Wang, President: Wang was founder of Stone Rich Sight Information Technology Services Company (SRS) and the developer of the first Chinese language version of the Microsoft Windows operating system Riley Willcox, COO and CFO: Willcox was the Chief Financial Officer of Premisys Communications and Network General (now part of Network Associates) Daniel Mao, Executive Vice President of corporate and business development. : Mao was Vice President of Walden International Investment Group
