CNNIC Survey reveals most popular Chinese websites

According to a survey sponsored by CNNIC (China Internet Network Information Center), the largest survey ever made among Internet users throughout China, SINA.com is remaining at the top among the ten most popular Chinese websites chosen by Chinese Internet users. The survey results came out on January 18, 2000. This is the second time SINA.com has won top place. It was elected the No.1 website in a similar CNNIC survey conducted 6 months ago. This additional vote further secures SINA.com's leadership in China's Internet industry.

Following internationally adopted practices, such as on-line automatic data searching and questionnaire investigation, CNNIC conducted an on-line survey on Internet development in China from December 15 - 31, 1999. The survey received 202,432 valid feedbacks to its questionnaires, based on which the Top Ten Chinese Websites were chosen. SINA.com, Netease.com and Sohu.com stood as the top three most popular Chinese websites.

Both the English and Chinese version of Yahoo, for the first time, lagged behind the leading Chinese websites. This indicates that the development of Chinese Internet websites has entered into a new era.

Glowing over the success at the CNNIC awarding ceremony, Mr Wang Zhidong, president and CEO of SINA.com, expressed thanks for the support from the governments at all levels and friends from all walks of life. He does not believe SINA.com's leadership is accidental. Over the last year, SINA.com has focused tremendous effort on developing the content and function of its site, from the launch of new channels such as SinaFinance and SinaLiving, to the major shakeup of SinaSearch, to the offer of 50M Mailbox. Each new offering has been additional evidence that SINA.com is keen on serving the needs of its users, which on the other hand could not have been realised without the generous support from all parts of society and its partners. SINA.com's growth is increasingly dependent on strategic co-operations and alliances, and attention and support from all quarters of society.

Mr Wang commented that the overall fast growth of China's Internet industry has provided SINA.com with more opportunities to pioneer into new businesses. He said: "We're delighted to see a blossoming Internet industry in China, where a healthy and organised environment has been built. It is especially encouraging to learn that the entire industry is keeping pace with the rapid growth."

According to CNNIC, Internet users in China have increased dramatically to 8.9 million users from only 4 million users in July 1999. According to recent statistics, female users account for 21% of all Internet users as compared to only 15% only one year ago.

The geographical distribution of users has also changed from centralization to localization, indicating that the Internet is pervading people from all walks of life in China and that the Internet age is rapidly maturing. Such pervasion and maturity is considered a great encouragement to Internet professionals.

In another survey entitled "China Internet Contest", SINA.com also ranked number one for best integrated online services among all national websites in China. The same survey cited Mr Wang Zhidong, president and CEO of SINA.com, as one of the "Top Ten Most Outstanding Internet Characters in China."

In view of SINA.com's rich experience in technical development, market service and website promotion, Mr Wang Zhidong claims SINA.com will capitalise on every opportunity it encounters to provide its consumers with the best content possible.
